Manager Application Development

About

I am a problem solver. I enjoy the challenge of approaching a problem, applying past experience, learning new techniques and developing a solution. Inspect, apply, learn, solve is the metronome that keeps me moving. Let's solve problems together.

I have a non-traditional background for a Software Engineer having pivoted to the world of software from a role in Mechanical Engineering. My career path highlights one of my greatest strengths, I'm multidimensional. I have a very deep technical background in Engineering, but I also have a keen business sense and love helping clients express their desires and needs. This skill was first learned while earning my MBA, but sharpened over my 10 years at Impact Technologies working directly with customers on a daily basis.

On the technical side I'm just as comfortable talking about build automation or dependency injection as I am discussing thermodynamics of a jet turbine engine. During my last seven years as a software engineer I've primarily worked on web applications and windows applications. In my personal time I've been developing several Android apps both of personal use and for the Rochester PBS affiliate WXXI.

When I'm not behind a keyboard you can find me building a pillow fort with my boys, playing fetch with our pup, cruising on our sailboat with my wife, or riding my bicycle. At this stage in my career I'm looking to work with a small, passionate group who values teamwork and relationships as much as producing top-quality work.

Work Experience

Lockheed Martin
September 2019 – Present
Manager: Application Development
I lead software development teams in the development of applications supporting analytic analysis and system monitoring. I also serve as the Senior Techlead for Software Development.
Highlights
  • Lux - I serve as the API lead for Lux, a massively scalable full stack software platform for ingesting, storing, processing, and visualizing huge amounts of data from fleets of complex assets.
  • SecDevOps - As Senior Techlead for Software Development, I lead educational activities that promote best practices related to application development, security and devops.
  • RTOK - I served as lead architect for RTOK, a lean web React/ExpressJS application for uploading re-test okay data, and tracking the status of various maintenance and fault data statuses.
Lockheed Martin
March 2014 – September 2019
Senior Software Engineer
I led software development teams in the creation of analytic analysis and system monitoring software for both military and commercial applications. I also perform the role of developer on several of these projects
Highlights
  • Helotrac - AngularJS web application that manages Helicopter Fleet Maintenance. As project maintainer I took the lead in guiding a team of 20 developers through more than 40 sprints over the past two years. I helped the team adopt modern DevOps practices including Unit Test Automation and Continuous Delivery.
  • Software Tooling - I took the lead in making the business case to adopt modern software tooling including bug tracking, self-hosted repo's, and build servers. I also administer those tools for the entire company and serve as an advocate for development best practices.
  • ADEM - .NET web application that parses, stores and processes commercial aircraft engine data. I implemented and tested all of the advanced analytic algorithms including turbine gas-path normalization, feature trend detection and fault isolation.
  • ASHM - .NET web application that parses, stores and processes aircraft engine data for A320, A380 and B787 aircraft. I was responsible for creating an automated daily alert email system that includes graphs of parametric engine data and distilling top level faults for VP level notification.
  • MMT - .NET Microsoft Surface Pro application that automatically downloads helicopter parametric data over wifi upon landing. The system then processes the flight data and provides several roll-up levels data including impending faults and maintenance information to on-site aircraft maintainers.
Impact Technologies
July 2011 – March 2014
Senior Project Engineer
I led multidisciplinary teams consisting of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers along with software developers to create advanced diagnostic and prognostic software solutions for both military and commercial applications.
Highlights
  • Streamlined Maintenance Action Ranking Tool - .NET Web application developed to reduce the burden on aircraft maintainers by intelligently capturing troubleshooting information utilizing a reasoning engine to determine root cause of failure.
  • SmartMon Oil Sensor - Oil quality monitoring device (hardware/firmware) targeting diesel driven Army ground vehicles. This sensor provides live oil quality measurements using multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
  • COST-A - Structural Health Monitoring system for the UH-60M BlackHawk helicopter.
  • IHSMS - Structural Health Monitoring system for the CH-53k King Stallion, the largest composite rotorcraft.
Impact Technologies
March 2008 – July 2011
Project Engineer
I worked as a member of a multidisciplinary team developing advanced diagnostic and prognostic solutions for mostly military applications.
Highlights
  • Bradley Fighting Vehicle Transmission Prognostics - Developed a prognostic solution to estimate the time to failure of several transmission components.
  • Embraer Bleed Valve Seeded Fault Test Stand - Designed and constructed a seeded fault test stand for the E-175 commercial jet bleed air valve.
  • Torque Sensor Validation - Designed and constructed a sensor validation test stand for estimating torque loads under dynamic conditions.
Delphi Automotive
March 2007 – February 2008
Valve Train Test Engineer
I developed and performed endurance and performance tests within the Valve Train Department. I led the endurance testing project for the dual stage cam phaser which is found on many of today's cars.
Highlights
  • Cam Phaser Endurance Test Stand - Designed and performed endurance and performance tests for DOHC cam phaser prototypes.

Yoga Pose
JSConf
12 August 2020

Let's have some fun with TensorFlow and React. Not familiar with TensorFlow? No problem, you will get a fast crash course and learn how to track faces and add silly adornments (I bet you would look good with a new set of reading frames) entirely in the browser with TensorFlow and React. With a good background in the tech let's expand to tracking multiple limbs and evaluating and scoring some yoga positions. We will look at a couple different scoring algorithms, and finally challenge the audience to beat our high score for ultimate bragging rights.

Development and Testing of an Online Oil Condition Monitor for Diesel Driven Army Ground Vehicles
SAE World Congress
16 April 2012

Describes the development and testing of an online oil condition monitor that utilizes a multi-frequency approach to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to interrogate and evaluate fluid health in near real time. A dual microcontroller processing architecture embedded in the sensor itself executes an oil-health evaluation algorithm and provides estimates of lubricant remaining useful life, as well as identification of the primary mode of degradation of the fluid.

Sensor Validation and Signal Recovery for Helicopter Engine Torque Sensors
American Helicopter Society
03 March 2011

The development of advanced algorithms designed to validate and synthesizing torque sensor readings for aircraft turboshaft engines. This solution consists of several modules, preprocessing for the reduction of noise and operational mode detection, diagnostic feature extraction, torque signal recovery, and a fault detection and classification module.
